Richard Singleton has been chairman of Telecentres Powys for over 5 years. He has attempted to resign as chairman several times but at the last AGM his resignation was not accepted by the members! So what are Telecentres?
Telecentres are Community I.T. enabled Learning & Resource Centres. In the county of Powys in Mid Wales (U.K.) there are more than 15 Telecentres, 12 of whom form a network of mutual assistance and knowledge sharing called Telecentres Powys.
Powys is a very sparsely populated county of 5,120 sq Km and only 126,000 people. Telecentres were established as a way of overcoming this 'rurality' which was resulting in an exodus of, especially, young people from the region. The Telecentres promoted I.T., helped and trained the local population and supported small businesses as well as community organisations and individual members of the public. Telecentres have been part of making Mid Wales a good place to do business, as well as helping make local communities more cohesive.
